Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government, here on Tuesday, handed over Rs 1.3 crore as compensation to the former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely implicated by the Kerala Police in the ISRO spy case.

The state government had earlier given him Rs 50 Lakhs, as the Supreme Court had directed to give him a compensation of Rs 50 Lakhs as damages for the false implication in the case.

The scientist had sued the state government demanding a compensation of Rs 1 Crore for the false implication in the ISRO spy case and the torture he went through in relation to the case. Following this, the state government had entrusted a committee chaired by K Jayakumar, former Chief Secretary, to talk to Nambi Narayanan and to arrive at a settlement in the case between the state and the scientist.

This committee had recommended the state to give him Rs 1.3 crore as compensation. The government accepted the recommendation by K Jayakumar and decided to pay the recommended amount as compensation in last December. In July, an order to this effect was issued.

Thus, the money was finally handed over to the scientist, on Tuesday, as a compensation for the damages caused to him through false implication in the ISRO spy case.
