The two plantains which were grown in the Church premises on a trial basis by Father Sijo has bloomed well with healthy banana bunches. Many farmers who have only heard about the Indonesian Popoulu have been visiting the Church premises to see how the plantain looks and how to cultivate it. Popoulu variety of banana is distinct for its round-shaped fruits, though the taste and colour are similar to that of the Nendran.

The Indonesian variety has piqued the curiosity of farmers here and they try to know more about the cultivation techniques. Father Sijo Povvathil, who had earlier only read about the banana variety, procured the plantain saplings of Popoulu with a lot of effort. The Popoulu plantain has been grown in India only for study and research purposes at the Kerala Agricultural University.

A peculiarity of this variety is that it cant be ripened and used as a fruit. The raw banana can be used to make chips and also in curries and other cooked dishes. Father Sijo says 'Popoulu' plantain can be grown in Idukki's climate very well and it is sure to provide good returns to the farmers. As the stem of the plantain is very strong, it would not require any support while being planted along the hillsides of Idukki. This makes it easier to cultivate Popoulu.

In one cluster of the banana bunch, there would be about 14 fruits. It has also been found to provide good returns with minimal organic manure. The weight of one mature bunch of plantain ranges from 20 to 28 kilograms. As the Church Vicar’s Popoulu experiment has become successful, those in the parish are all set to plant more Popoulu saplings in the Church’s front yard and make it a Popoulu farm.
