Idukki: Bineesh from Udumbanchola in Idukki is not just another craftsman who is into coconut shell art. His products include hair clips, watches and even chairs - all made from coconut shells.
He started by making a Nilavilakku (traditional lamp usually made of brass) out of interest to see how it would come out. When that became successful, Bineesh set his hands to make a watch, pens, hair clip, Sindoora Cheppu (a tiny casket used to keep Kumkum), jug, saucer, Pappada Kol (a sharp stick used to deep fry pappad), plates, glasses, hair bows, jars, salt canister, coconut grater, chair, ladles, spoons, lamps and a lot more daily use articles using coconut shell.
Each of such articles requires two weeks to two months of persistent efforts to finish them.
