Fire breaks out at Brahmapuram waste plant in Kochi

A fire broke out at Brahmapuram waste plant in Kochi in Kerala. Fire officials informed that the blaze is spreading constantly across the dumping ground. Fire fighting operations are underway.

Kochi: A massive fire broke out at Brahmapuram waste treatment plant leading to the formation of thick smoke in the area. According to reports, the Kochi Corporation's treatment plant caught fire on Tuesday afternoon and fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The fire reportedly spread through the garbage dumping yard. A total of 18 fire fighting units from various fire and rescue stations worked in tandem to bring the fire under control.

However, they could not douse the fire completely. The smoke also spread to the neighbouring residential areas causing serious health issues to the residents.

A special team, led by the district collector, has been put in place to check the air quality in the region. The administration also urged the nearby residents to keep the doors and windows closed, as the toxic fumes from the dumping yard kept rising.

According to reports, a total of 100 fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire and stop the spread any further. In the last summer, the dumping yard caught fire two times and caused massive damage to the air quality in the region.
