Hyderabad:Mohanlal, an actor, who made his entry into the films as an antagonist, and stays in the hearts of the all film lovers as a hero for years together, celebrates his 60th birthday today.

Born on 1960 May 21, as the second son to Vishwanathan Nair and Shantha kumari in Pathanamthitta, Mohanlal is ‘Lalettan’ for the young and the old.

Mohanlal began his acting stint right from his school days, participating in stage plays. He had won the best actor prize while in his 6th standard at Thiruvananthapuram Model School.

Lal’s first movie, Thiranottam, was produced by the production company, named Bharath Cine Group, a production venture by his friends. Lal had donned a comedian role in this movie. However, it could not be released due to many factors. Later, Lal, who was just twenty years old then, was offered an antagonist’s role in Director Fazil’s Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Following his first release, Lal was offered many movies by most of the directors then. He had acted in 25 movies in the year 1983.

Lal’s performances through the ’90s made him a favourite actor, a born actor and a versatile actor among the whole lot. His roles in Namukku Parkkan Mundiri Thoppukal, Nadodikattu, Thoovanathumbikal, Chitram, Kireedam, Bharatham, Devasuram, Vanaprastham, Sphadikam, Thanmatra, Drishyam, Spirit and many many more movies were critically acclaimed and remain all-time favourites of Keralites. Mohanlal has acted in more than 350 films so far.

Actor Mohanlal is one among them for all Keralites; they consider him as one in their family or friend circle who is very close to them. Perhaps, that is why Keralites hold the characters presented by the actor so close to their hearts through these four decades.

His debut in Tamil in Iruvar released in 1997 was acclaimed and gave him an opening into movies in other languages.

Lal, who has received 4 National awards including 2 for the Best Actor, is known for his natural and spontaneous style of acting. He has also proved his mettle in playback singing.

Recognising his remarkable contributions to the film industry, Mohanlal was awarded Padmasree, the 4th highest civilian honour in 2001 and in 2019, he was honoured with Padmabhooshan the third highest civilian honour by the Indian Government. In 2009, he was honoured with the Lieutenant Colonel title, besides a doctorate awarded by Kaladi Sree Shankaracharya Sanskrit University.

On his 60th birthday amid COVID lockdown, Mohanlal is with his wife Suchitra and their son Pranav at his home in Chennai. Their daughter Vismaya is in Australia and his mother Shanthakumari is in their house in Kochi.

His fans are signing organ donation forms and are involved in many other programmes as part of celebrating their hero’s birthday. ETV Bharat wishes Mohanlal, the uncrowned king of Malayalam cinema, on his 60th birthday.
