A symbol of women power: Subeena Rahman, the angel of the dead

A native of Irinjalakuda in Kerala, she entered the men’s forte- of being an undertaker at a local crematorium - with the only intention of pulling through her life’s situations.

In just one year after taking up the work of a mortician at Irinjalakuda SNBS Samajam Mukthisthan, a crematorium, Subeena has been there to cremate the dead bodies of more than a thousand persons, witnessing their last rites. Any normal day begins for Subeena by cremating the dead.

She joined the crematorium as a mortician at Mukthisthan, at 27 years of age.

She had to sustain herself and survive without depending on her husband. Initially, Subeena just smiled and ignored the neglect and scorn she faced for the work she took up. The path Subeena chose was unwelcomed by the society, community and even by her relatives as it broke the existing norms and notions.

The income that she gets for this work, which even the kin of the dead would hesitate to do, is very meagre.

However, those who looked down upon her have started recognising her work of late.

Being at the job of dealing with death and the dead bodies every day, Subeena sees life with hope and positivity.
