This 'baseless' Karnataka village is built entirely out of stones

70 huts in Karnataka's Koppal village are built entirely out of stones and soil. No cement or bricks are used in the construction of the houses, which are not built on a constructed foundation, but on the surface of a rocky hillock.

Koppal: A sleepy little village in Karnataka's Koppal district might seem unassuming at first glance, but it literally 'houses' 70 small architectural wonders.

Harishankarbandi village in Koppal's Kukunuru Taluk has a unique feature about its homes - none of them are built using cement, iron, or bricks.

Out of the 100 homes in the village, 70 are situated atop one single rocky hillock. Due to this unique feature where the hillock provides a solid base, homes can be constructed straight off the surface of the rock, without having to dig to lay a foundation.

If the thought of homes without foundations was bizarre enough, the 'rocky' huts take it one step further - as they are entirely built of stones and soil. No other binding agent is required to hold the pieces of stone together.

Villagers claim the houses are so strongly built, that they can easily withstand earthquakes and last up to 60 years without the need for much maintenance.

The residents of these houses also claim that they never require air conditioners, as the rocky exteriors of their homes keep them cool inside.

Yet another unique feature about the hamlet is that no roads are built to link the houses - as the majority of the village rests on the singular rocky hillock. The gaps between the houses make for durable roads themselves.
