Mangalore: Demand for the 'Shankarapura Mallige', a variety of Jasmine grown in the Shankarpura region and its surrounding villages in Karnataka, has been increasing rapidly not only in the domestic market but also in the global market.

Shankarapura Jasmine has remained one of the most favourite flowers of commercial growers as it fetches a good price in the market. Therefore, it pushes farmers to grow Jasmine flowers. It is sold at Rs 200 to Rs 800 per 'atte' i.e., around 3000 flower buds and sometimes it increases to Rs 2000.

The increasing demand of the flower encourages farmers to balance the supply side which ultimately leads to a good yield. A farmer in Shankarpura said, "There is a huge demand for the flower from Karnataka and other states, as many temples are regularly ordering these flowers during festivals."
