Probe ordered in Dalit man humiliation case

A police sub-inspector in Karnataka has been suspended for allegedly assaulting a Dalit man and forcing him to consume urine during interrogation at the police station in Mudigere Taluk in the district. The government has ordered a CID probe in the case.

Chikmagalur (Karnataka): A police sub-inspector in Karnataka has been suspended for allegedly assaulting a Dalit man and forcing him to consume urine during interrogation at the police station in Mudigere Taluk in the district. The government has ordered a CID probe in the case.

The matter came to light after a youngster named Puneet wrote to Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood and sought action against the sub-inspector and other policemen. Chikkamagaluru SP Akshay informed the SP of Puttur that an investigation into the case has been ordered.

According to Puneet, he was taken to the police station on May 10 over allegations by villagers that he was in contact with a woman who had eloped with another man.

In a video, Puneet alleged the station officer called him to the police station and abused him. Dalit organizations have also lodged a complaint in connection with the incident.

An FIR was registered against the police sub-inspector on charges of assault. Based on a report by district SP Akshay, the DIG had suspended PSI Arjun and ordered a probe into the case.
