Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared August 23 as National Space Day in recognition of its significance following the landing of the country's prestigious Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon.

Bengaluru (Karnataka): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared August 23 as National Space Day in recognition of its significance following the landing of the country's prestigious Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon.

"On August 23, India hoisted the (national) flag on the Moon. From now onwards, that day will be known as National Space Day in India", PM Narendra Modi said while interacting with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists at the ISRO centre here after the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, the country's third lunar mission.

The Prime Minister, who was welcomed by the ISRO chief S Somanath, added that the entire country was proud of the scientists, who have worked relentlessly hard.

The PM also informed that the point where the Vikram lander touched the moon would be known as the 'Shivshakti' point while the point where the Chandrayaan-2 mission left its footprints would be known as the Tirangana point.

"Women scientists played a key role in Chandrayaan 3. This 'Shivkshakti' point will inspire the upcoming generations to use science for the welfare of people. The welfare of people is our supreme commitment," added Prime Minister Modi at the ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network Mission Control Complex. According to the Prime Minister, in the 21st century, the country that will excel in science and technology will move ahead.
