NWKRTC fails to implement voluntary vehicle scrapping policy

The North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has failed to implement the Central govt's voluntary vehicle scrapping policy to phase out old and unfit vehicles. Nearly 2,500 busses among NWKRTC's fleet of 5,000 busses have crossed their terms. But the department is still using these busses on the road.

Hubli (Karnataka): The central government announced the rollout of the voluntary vehicle scrapping policy to phase out old and unfit vehicles. But one of the government organizations, North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), has failed to implement the scrapping policy. Even though the buses are in conditions, the department is still plying the vehicles.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget of 2021-22 said a Rs 18,000-crore-scheme will be launched for city bus systems to increase the availability of public transport in urban areas.

Although the NWKRTC runs one of the largest fleets of busses in the state, nearly 2,500 busses among 5,000 busses in NWKRTC fleet have crossed their fitness term.

According to the rules and regulations, the bus which runs for 7.5 lakh Kilometers should be decommissioned. But, although around two thousand of its busses have crossed more than 10 lakh Kms mark in NWKRTC.
