Locals pool in money to build lake in Karnataka's Dharwad city amid COVID-19 lockdown

Locals of Karnataka's Dharwad city built a huge lake on a vacant piece of land by pooling in money amid COVID-19-induced lockdown. They proceeded with the construction of the lake on their own after the district authorities denied their plea for funds.

Dharwad (Karnataka): At a time when urbanisation is on the rise and people are coming up with more-and-more ideas to build space-efficient buildings, locals in Karnataka's Dharwad built a lake on a large piece of land that was vacant for years.

Most of these people were sitting idle amid the COVID-19-induced lockdown and so people from four areas of the city including Basaveshwara Badavane, Shakambari area, Gurudeva and Nandini collaborated together to construct a lake on a 1.5-acre plot of government-owned land in their city.

Initially, their plea for the fund for building the lake was denied by district officials, so the locals pooled in Rs 3 lakh for the same.

Several attempts to occupy the site have been made by builders and businessmen since 2002 but in vain.

On the brighter side, the arrival of monsoon facilitated the filling of the lake via a natural source.
