Karnataka's Koppal fights TB through village adoption model

In a bid to detect, treat, and prevent tuberculosis in rural regions, Koppal district in Karnataka has been following the 'TB free village adoption model', where seven private doctors have adopted a total of 52 villages in the district. The doctors have been working on tuberculosis awareness and detection programmes, appropriate treatment and distribution of nutritious food to the adopted villages.

Koppal (Karnataka): The Koppal district in Karnataka has adopted the 'TB free village adoption model' to step up efforts in eliminating tuberculosis (TB).

Though the government has been making dedicated efforts to control tuberculosis, many cases still remain undetected. Consequently, many such undetected individuals succumb to the disease without proper treatment. To avoid this, the government is implementing various programs for tuberculosis detection.

Koppal has become the first district in the state to offer the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis along with private physician cooperation. To facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, seven private doctors in Koppal district have adopted 52 villages.

"Approximately 70 cases of tuberculosis have been detected in villages adopted by private doctors. They have been treated appropriately in co-operation with private physicians who adopt villages," said District Tuberculosis Controller Dr Mahesh MG.

While Dr Sivanagouda Patil adopted 11 villages, the remaining doctors adopted 41 villages. The doctors have been working on tuberculosis awareness and detection programmes, appropriate treatment and distribution of nutritious food to the adopted villages.

"I have been inspired by the work of Tuberculosis Controller Dr Mahesh MG on Tuberculosis Control in the district and have adopted villages. Asha workers distribute milk and eggs to tuberculosis patients. Awareness programs are organised. We have adopted 11 villages in the hope that we too will provide a service in the eradication of tuberculosis," Dr Patil said.
