Bengaluru (Karnataka): In extremely worrying signs, statistics revealed that Karnataka witnessed a steep increase in the number of farmer suicides this years compared to 2018-19.
Though the state recorded comparatively lesser number of farmer suicides in 2018-19, statistics accessed by ETV Bharat show a steep increase in the suicide cases in 2019-20.
Number of farmer suicides in Karnataka in the past few years During 2019-20, 908 farmer suicides have been reported in the state, compared to 708 in 2018-19. As many as 122 farmers took the extreme step owing to personal reasons and the government has rejected the claims for compensation. However, 660 cases were considered as genuine and the government is also examining the remaining 127 cases, said an official from the agricultural department.

Out of 908 farmers suicide cases reported in 2019-20, the Mumbai Karnataka regions stands on top of the list with 326 suicides, followed by Kalyana Karnataka which registered 204 suicide cases.
Facing difficulty in repaying the crop loans due to continuous drought and unprecedented floods in the recent past, farmers are reportedly resorting to the extreme step.
