Karnataka: Rape accused commits suicide in police custody

An accused, arrested in connection with the Vijayapura rape case, has committed suicide in police custody. The accused ended his life by hanging himself in the police station's toilet today morning.

Vijayapura: An accused arrested in connection with the Vijayapura rape case has committed suicide in police custody. The accused ended his life by hanging himself in the police station's toilet today morning.

Sindgi police had arrested accused Devendra Sangogi yesterday in connection with the case.

"He went to the police station's toilet today early morning but was found hanging. Police staff immediately took the accused to the local hospital where he died during treatment," SP Anand Kumar informed reporters.

Speaking to reporters SP Kumar said, "This seems like a lockup death, but the accused did not die from police harassment. He died by hanging himself. These kinds of cases are referred to as CID investigations. Thus, we will submit a report on this incident to higher officers for CID investigation."

The deceased's parents and relatives protested in front of the police station.
