Bengaluru: The outgoing Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai defeated Congress candidate Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan in the Shiggaon constituency of Haveri district. Bommai will be returning to the House for the fourth straight term from this seat, which he has been retaining since 2008. Congress initially named Mohammad Yusuf as its candidate. Later, it chose Yasir Ahmed Khan. Here are the winners and losers of Bommai's Cabinet.
R Ashoka (Padmanabhanagar - Kanakpura): Revenue Minister R Ashoka, who contested from two constituencies, has won the Padmanabhanagar constituency with a margin of over 54,734 votes. While R Ashoka secured 98,174 whereas Congress candidate V Raghunatha Naidu managed 43,440 votes. The party's high command has asked Ashok to contest from Kanakapura where KPCC president DK Shivakumar was fielded. But, he failed to give a tough fight to Shivakumar and the latter won the Kanakapura constituency with 1,41,117 votes.
V Somanna (Chamarajanagar - Varuna):Housing Minister V Somanna was asked to contest in two seats--Chamarajanagar and Varuna-- but Somanna has lost both constituencies. He lost the Chamarajanagar seats with a margin of over 7,383 votes. While Puttaranga Shetty secured 83,136 votes, Somanna managed 75,753 votes. Somanna was earlier elected from Govindaraja Nagar.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah won the Varuna constituency with a margin of over 46,045. Siddaramaiah secured 1,16,856, while V Somanna managed to secure 70,811 votes. Though Somanna was not keen on contesting from Varuna, the BJP top brass directed him to enter the fray from Varuna as well hoping that he would be able to give sleepless nights to former CM Siddaramaiah, who was seeking a re-election.
Govinda Karajola (Mudhol):Irrigation Minister Govinda Karajola, who contested from Mudhol constituency from Bagalkot district has lost the election against Congress candidate RB Thimmapura. RB Thimmapura won with a margin of over 17,416 votes. Thimmapura secured 76,827 votes, while Govinda Karajola managed 59,401 votes. Satish Bandivadder who sought a Congress ticket was also in the fray as a rebel candidate after the grand-old party turned down his request.
B Sreeramulu (Bellari Rural):Transport Minister B Sreeramulu, who previously represented Molakalmuru constituency lost the Bellari Rural and Congress candidate B Nagendra won the constituency with a margin of over 30,00 votes.
Madhuswamy (Chikkanayakanahalli): Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhuswamy was locked in a tough fight in the Chikkanayakanahalli constituency of Tumkur district, facing JD(S) candidate CB Suresh Babu, the minster lost the election while Suresh Babu won the election over a margin of 10,000 votes.
Araga Gyanendra (Theerthahalli):Home Minister Araga Gyanendra and former Congress Minister Kimmane Ratnakar were in a direct contest in Thirthahalli (Shivamogga district). Araga Gyanendra won the Theerthahalli constituency over a margin of 12,000 votes against Congress candidate Kimmane Ratnakar. Since 1983 Araga has been contesting the elections, till date he entered the fray 10 times, including the present contest in a row, and has created a record of sorts. He has won four times and lost five times.
CN Ashwath Narayan (Malleswaram): In the Malleswaram constituency in Bengaluru, the fight was between Higher Education Minister CN Ashwatha Narayan and Anoop Iyengar of Congress. While BJP candidate Ashwanath Narayan won the Malleswaram constituency against Congress candidate Anoop Iyengar with a margin of over 40,000 votes.
CC Patil (Naragunda):PWD Minister CC Patil has won the Naragunda constituency of Gadag district against Congress candidate BR Yawgal with a margin of over 2,000 votes. Yawgal had won five times in the same constituency while Patil won thrice.
Prabhu Chavan (Aurad):Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan was contesting from the Aurad constituency in Bidar district has won against Congress candidate Bhimsen Rao Shinde over a margin of 9,000 votes.
Murugesha Nirani (Beelagi):There was a direct contest between Industry Minister Murugesha Nirani and JT Patil of Congress in the Bilagi constituency of Bagalkot district. Nirani lost the election and Payil has won with a margin of over 10,000 votes. They had been fighting against each other for the past three decades. In six elections, both have won three times each.
Shivram Hebbar (Yallapur):Labour Minister Shivram Hebbar won the Tallapur constituency against Congress candidate VS Patil with a margin of over 3,000 votes. Shivram was elected on Congress ticket in 2013 and 2018. He later joined the BJP and won by-election.
