Hanamata Devanurara, who works as an autorickshaw driver, starts attending to at least 200 residents of his Mahatma Gandhi Leprosy colony in the morning, cleaning and bandaging their sores for two-and-a-half hours.

He then leaves for his daily work of ferrying passengers in his autorickshaw.

His wife Basamma, who worked as a nurse has turned to serve the leprosy patients in her home along with her husband after noticing the negligence in the hospital by the doctors.

Devanurara's father and mother had suffered from leprosy. They did not get the proper treatment at that time by the hospital.

After noticing carelessness in the hospital, Basamma and Devanurara thought about treating the leprosy patients in their home.

Hanumant sets aside some money from his monthly earnings towards purchasing bandages and other necessary material for dressing the patients.

Basamma and Devanura have built a clinic in the colony where they treat patients. They also provide shelter and treatment to the people, who are neglected by their families.

Over 200 patients are currently receiving treatment at their clinic. Many associations have facilitated to Devanura and Basamma for their work.

Hanumant was awarded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2015. The then Vice president Hamid Ansari had presented the award to him for his services to leprosy patients. He has also been felicitated by the International Leprosy Union.
