Golooru fair, a festival of abusing in Karnataka

People of Golooru village in Karnataka's Mysuru celebrate a fair with unique features in which a semi-naked priest abuses those who live a lecherous life. Golooru fair which held the next day of the main village deity's car festival also witnessed a special form of dance where a group of men throws colour to people around them. Villagers believe that those who participated in the fair get a healthy and prosperous life.

Mysuru (Karnataka): People of Golooru village in Karnataka's Mysuru observe a special kind of fair every year in which a half-naked priest scolds those who spend a lecherous life.

In Golooru fair the priest climbed up a pillar and started abusing in a very harsh manner all those villagers who are in illicit relationships. This ritual has been continuing for over one-and-a-half hours with choicest of abuse.

The priest publicly took the name of such men and women, but none uttered a single word against him.

The Golooru fair held the next day of the main village deity's car festival.

During the fair, a group of men performed a special form of dance in which they threw coloured water brought into the pots on the people around them.

The consumption of non-vegetarian food is banned in this fair.

The residents of the seven surrounding villages have participated in this festival.

People have some beliefs regarding the fair.

They believe that those people whose names had been uttered by the priest would sanctify their character.

Besides, the villagers believe that those who see the semi-naked priest will get children if they do not have any.

There is also a belief that unmarried girls will get married soon if they take part in this village fair.
