For tribals of Chamarajanagar, even funerals are an uphill task

The residents of Mamballi, a tribal village in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar, have extreme trouble while carrying out the funerals of the deceased, as they have to carry the body over a rivulet on a makeshift bridge.

Chamarajanagar (Karnataka): For the tribal people in a village in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar district, performing the final rites of the deceased is an extremely uphill task, owing to the lack of proper road connectivity.

Mamballi village in Chamarajanagar district, is surrounded with thick forests and is inhabited by the tribal community. Apart from the scarcity of basic resources, the people also suffer from no proper transport facility to travel out of the village.

As a result, funeral ceremonies become an extremely tough job, as the people have to carry the dead body on their shoulders and walk long distances, as the body cannot be transported on a vehicle.

To make matters worse, the people have to cross the Honna Hole rivulet on a makeshift bridge made out of wooden planks to get out of the village. Though people manage to cross on the bridge during summers, the route becomes extremely dangerous during the monsoons.

The villagers expressed outrage over their misery after the death of Keshavmurthy, a social activist and an MPhil holder, who hailed from the village. While carrying Keshavmurthy's dead body for the funeral, a villager recorded a video and shared it on social media.

The video soon went viral, and people expressed their outrage, demanding that the government solve the problem faced by the villagers.

Pertinently, the village is situated just eight kilometres away from the town of Kollegala, but the residents still face transportation problems. Further, former legislator Jayanna and even the father of current Chamarajanagar Dy Commissioner MR Ravi hail from the village, but the residents still have no proper road connectivity.
