 Very severe Cyclone Kyarr intensifies into super cyclonic storm, moves away from Goa: IMD

Cyclone Kyarr, which has been gaining momentum for the past couple of days, has further intensified into a super cyclone according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

"Very severe cyclone Kyarr has further intensified into the super cyclone. Now it is over the east-central Arabian Sea, approx 650 km away from Goa," said IMD Goa official Rahul M.

"Even though the system is very severe over the east-central Arabian Sea, it is going to have very minimal impact on Goa," he added.

The cyclonic storm Kyarr is moving away from the western coast resulting in the decrease of the rainfall activity over Goa from the late evening of Saturday, the weather forecast agency stated.

On its Twitter account, World Cyclone Warning Center has stated that the super cyclone Kyarr has continued to rapidly intensify and has now become only the second Category 5 on record in the Arabian Sea.

"Maximum sustained winds have increased to 160mph, minimum central pressure has decreased to 928 mb" it stated.

19 fishermen rescued; 2100 ships docked

Indian Coast Guard has so far rescued 19 fishermen and escorted more than 2100 fishing boats to safety at various ports in the West Coast. According to ICG, Teg has rescued 17 fishermen from a sinking fishing boat Vaishno Devi Mata off Mumbai High in very severe cyclonic weather conditions.

Coast Guard in coordination with fisheries authorities of respective states has confirmed that no fishing boats are presently operating at sea.  According to reports, ships and aircraft deployed at sea are also keeping a lookout for warning/shepherding of fishing boats if sighted/located at sea.

IMD predicts rough sea condition

The sea condition is very likely to be high to very high over the east-central Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours and phenomenal thereafter. It will be rough to very rough along and off north Karnataka coast during next 24 hours.

Further, the agency also predicted rain/thundershowers at many places over South interior Karnataka and at a few places over Coastal Karnataka and North interior Karnataka

Indian Coast Guard has stepped up efforts for search and rescue operations on Western Coast in the wake of cyclone Kyarr.  According to reports, Dornier aircraft is undertaking frequent sortie to look for stranded fishing boats and their positions are being relayed to Coast Guard Ships operating at sea.

Indian Coast Guard rescues fishermen from stranded boat

According to the Indian Coast Guard, Amartya (ship) rescued five fishermen from stranded fishing boat, Rajkiran near Karwar on October 25.

All the fishermen onboard has been rescued and have been administered first aid and reported to be stable.

Water recedes from inundated Mumbai-Goa highway

In a relief, water levels on several stretches on Mumbai-Goa national highway between Canacona and Margao receded on Saturday though heavy rains continued to lash Goa on the fourth consecutive day.

According to officials, the overall situation is normal in the coastal state which has been witnessing heavy rains since October 23.

In view of the IMD, prediction of heavy rains on Saturday, state authorities have issued a warning to fishermen and tourists against venturing into sea.

"Water levels receded from several stretches on the national highway which were under water on Friday," an official said on Saturday.

The Mumbai-Goa national highway was inundated at several places between Canacona and Margao on Friday following the heavy post-monsoon rains.

A depression over east-central Arabian Sea intensified into cyclonic storm "Kyarr", which is likely to bring heavy showers in coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

Cyclone Kyarr turns 'super cyclonic'; moves away from Goa

Mangaluru (Karnataka): The effects of cyclone Kyarr passing along the coast of Karnataka were felt in Dakshina Kannada district with the entire region experiencing heavy rains throughout Thursday night and intermittent rains on Friday.

Several trees were uprooted in gusty winds that lashed the area, damaging houses in many places.

"The cyclone now lay centered about 190 km west of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra," sources in the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The IMD and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have warned that the sea conditions are likely to be rough along the Karnataka coast during the next 24 hours.

A red alert has been sounded for Dakshina, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts with the prediction that the region is likely to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall (above 200 mm) in the next 24 hours.

Dakshina Kannada district received 32.4 mm rainfall on Friday, with Mangaluru, Bantwal and Belthangady receiving excess rains compared to last year during the same period.

"The level of Nethravati river is also rising and stood at 25 metres, below the danger-level of 29.5 metres," the sources said.

The IMD has also predicted huge waves between three metres to 3.3 metres for the next 24 to 36 hours along the coast from Mangaluru, Malpe and Karwar.

Fishermen were advised not to venture into the rough sea for the next two days.
