Shivamogga (Karnataka): A baby elephant, who had reportedly lost its mother in a freak accident near a lake in the forest, was rescued by the forest department officials on Wednesday.
The mother elephant is said to have drowned in the lake situated in Hassan district while drinking water from it.
Baby elephant rescued by forest officials "Even though the baby cannot speak (any human language), its cries have been heart-rending," claimed the forest officials.
They rescued the calf and shifted it to Sakrebailu Elephant Camp in Shivamogga district of Karnataka, where it will share the new home with other elephants in the sanctuary.
The baby has been assigned with a caretaker - Jaan, and other elephants -Subhadre and Gange, in order to make it used to thenew environment and tame it accordingly.
Vinay, a doctor working with the sanctuary, had performed a preliminary check over its health and is being provided with food and water by the caretaker.
