35-year-old man attempts self-immolation at temple in Karnataka

A 35-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze at Mahamayi Mahasati Temple of Kharvikeri in Udupi district of Karnataka. Two people who tried to save him also suffered serious injuries. All have been admitted to a hospital.

Udupi: A 35-year-old man allegedly set himself ablaze at a temple here on Thursday after dousing himself in petrol. Two people who tried to save him also suffered serious injuries.

According to reports, the Mahalaya Amavasya celebrations was being held at Mahamayi Mahasati Temple of Kharvikeri.

Raghavendra Kharvi entered the temple and poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire using the diya lighted in the temple. Janardhan Kharvi and Laxman Kharvi suffered serious burn injuries while trying to save him.

All three have been admitted to the hospital. Their condition is stated to be serious. The reason behind the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.

A case has been registered in Gangolli police station and the investigation is underway.
