Belagavi (Karnataka):A 12-year-old boy in Karnataka's Belagavi, who swallowed 12 magnet buttons of the English alphabet set, has survived after availing timely treatment. The minor has been discharged from hospital on Thursday.
According to sources, the boy was brought to KLE Hospital in Belgaum on May 7 after he complained to his parents about the magnets he had swallowed while playing.
12-yr-old swallows 12 magnets English alphabets button set An abdominal scan confirmed the same and showed the 12 tiny magnets sitting at the bottom of his stomach, at the beginning of the intestinal tract. The treatment was led by a pediatric specialist, Dr Santhosh Kurabet, who performed a surgery to remove the 12 magnetic buttons, sources said.

Had the procedure been delayed, it could have led to sepsis and infection. The removal of the 12 magnets was extremely difficult and hard. The surgery lasted more than two and a half hours, and we removed those buttons one by one," said Dr. Kurabet.
"We have seen many cases like toys, screws, coins, tiny batteries, and sharp-edged metal pieces are what end up in children’s stomachs. Pediatricians have been raising concerns about children’s toys, which can lead to medical emergencies. There’s a need to formulate child safety regulations for toy makings," Dr Kurabet added.
