Jharkhand minister demands high-level probe into Navy sailor's killing

Jharkhand Minister Rameshwar Oraon has written to the Union Home Secretary seeking a high-level probe into the kidnapping and murder of Indian navy sailor Suraj Kumar Dubey from the state.

New Delhi: Jharkhand Finance Minister and the president of the state Congress unit Rameshwar Oraon wrote to the Union Home Secretary and demanded a high-level probe into the killing of a Jharkhand-origin Navy sailor in Maharashtra.

A 26-year-old Navy sailor, Suraj Kumar Dubey, was purportedly abducted in Chennai on January 30 and was set on fire by the kidnappers in jungles of Maharashtra's Palghar district.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Minister Oraon said he has written a letter to Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla. Dubey hailed from Palamu in Jharkhand.

"I told the Union Home Secretary that I too am a resident of Palamu and have a very good acquaintance with Suraj Dubey's family. I have demanded from the Home Secretary that the kidnapping and murder should be investigated by a top-level agency," Oraon said.

"I have demanded that the entire incident should be investigated soon and his family get justice. His family should also get compensation," he added.

Oraon further said that he would speak with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over the incident.

As per the preliminary information, when he was returning from vacation on January 30, three men abducted Dubey at gunpoint outside Chennai Airport around 9 pm and demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh.

He was kept captive in Chennai for three days and later shifted to an area near Vevji in Talasari area of Palghar district of Maharashtra, close to Mumbai and 1,400 km away from the Tamil Nadu capital.

The abductors later tied his hands and legs and set him on fire in jungles near Gholvad, and fled leaving him for dead, police said.
