Jharkhand: Cybercriminals resort to porn, dating sites to dupe people

Over the past few months, Jharkhand has seen an increase in the cases of cybercrime and 'sextortion'. There have been more than a dozen such cases in the capital Ranchi in recent times, where cybercriminals took girls pictures from their social media accounts and uploaded on dating sites to dupe people.

Ranchi: The number of cybercrimes has skyrocketed in the Jharkhand during COVID-19 pandemic. The cyber police have big challenges to trace the cases as a number of cases are registered on a daily basis.

The experts say that cybercriminals are resorting to different methods these days in order to dupe people.

Over the past few months, the state has seen an increase in the cases of cybercrime and 'sextortion'-essentially, blackmail for sexual gain.

Cases like these usually involve a blackmailer with access to a person's private videos or photographs. This can happen in a number of ways - a hacker might break into someone's phone or computer and gain access to private material, say the experts.

There have been more than a dozen such cases in the capital Ranchi in recent times, where cybercriminals took girls pictures from their social media accounts and uploaded on dating sites to dupe people.

Speaking on this, Saurabh, Superintendent of police of Ranchi, said that there have been many such cases where girls photos were used on the dating sites to dupe people.

"As soon as the matter came to our knowledge, we took actions and got closed such sites," he added.

According to reports, From the beginning of 2020 until the end of the lockdown, The cyber and female police station of Ranchi had maximum cases pertaining to girls' photos illegally used on the dating sites.
