Ranchi: Former Jharkhand minister Harinarayan Rai and his wife Susheela Devi, who were arrested in a disproportionate assets case, have been sent to jail again.
Rai, his wife and younger brother Sanjay Kumar Rai were sentenced to 5 years in jail in 2016, against which they had made an appeal in the High Court which was turned down by it on November 4, upholding the sentencing awarded by the CBI Court.
The former minister, who was currently on bail, was asked to surrender but as he failed to do so, a warrant was issued against him by the CBI court following which he was arrested on Wednesday.
Rai is also convicted for seven years in a money laundering case involving Rs 4.33 crore.
Background of the case: -
-A complaint was made against him in 'Nigrani' court on August 8, 2008
-An FIR filed against him 'Nigrani' police station on Nov 2, 2008
-One more FIR was filed in money laundering case in September 2009
-The CBI took over the case on August 2009
-He was arrested on August 17, 2009
-CBI files a charge sheet on January 27, 2017
-On December 14, 2016, the CBI court sends him to jail for five years
-On July 12, 2017, after serving the half jail term, the court grants him bail
-On November 4, 2020, the High Court rejects his appeal
-On November five, 2020, High Court issues warrant against him
-On December 9, 2020, the CBI arrested him as he failed to surrender before the investigating
agency
-On December 10, 2020, he was sent to jail again
-Besides, he was punished by ED also under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
-He has already served three years of his five-year jail term.
Meanwhile, His advocate has said by sending him to jail, the CBI has done its duty but he still has a right to appeal in the Supreme Court. Former chief minister of Jharkhand Madhu Koda and many of his ministers have also been booked disproportionate assets case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
