Union ministry extends tenure of Jammu and Kashmir gurdwara committees by 3 months

Sukhbir Singh Badal, Shiromani Akali Dal Badal president thanked Amit Shah for extending the tenure of Jammu and Kashmir Gurudwara committees for three months.

Jammu:Shiromani Akali Dal Badal president Sukhbir Singh Badal thanked Union Home minister Amit Shah for extending the tenure of Jammu and Kashmir Gurudwara committees for three months. The elections for these committees were due but could not be completed due to COVID-19 outbreak.

A Sikh delegation last week met Union Minister Amit Shah and took up matters related to the minority status of Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir.

Issues related to Gurdwara committee were also taken up with Sukhbir Singh Badal who in a telephonic conversation requested Union Home minister to help.

"Jammu and Kashmir have 10 Gurdwara committees each. The committee elections were not possible due to pandemic. I, on behalf of Sikh Sangat, requested Union Minister to extend the tenure of committees. In the morning I was informed about an extension for 3 months and I am thankful to Union ministry", said Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The term of the board ended on July 8 and elections are due but because of COVID situation, the elections cannot be held. Jathedar Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh opposed the move of Jammu and Kashmir administration to break down the Gurdwara management board in J&K.

Giani Harpreet Singh termed it as an anti-Sikh move for replacement of board with people nominated by the administration of Jammu and Kashmir to run gurdwaras in the union territory.

Akal Takht Jathedar is the supreme institution of the Sikh community protecting the rights and religion of the Sikh community.
