Death toll in Rajouri IED blast reaches 2
Dangri (J&K):The twin attacks with a mere difference of 14 hours in Jammu's Dangri village have shaken the country.A four-year-old child and a woman were killed, and seven people were injured in an IED explosion at the same place on Monday. Here are the latest developments in the attacks:
- Just a day after the killing of four civilians in Rajouri, two people were killed and seven were severely injured in an IED explosion on Monday. The explosion went off near the house of one of the victims of the previous day's terrorist attack at the same site. One of the victims of today's blast is a four-year-old child identified as Vihan Kumar, and another is a 40-year-old woman.
- Eyewitnesses said the blast took place at around 9.30 am in the house which had several people, including the kin of the Sunday attack's victim, inside it. Sanvi Sharma (4), Kanaya Sharma (14), Vanshu Sharma (15), Samiksha Devi (20), Sharda Devi (38), Kamlesh Devi (55), and Samiksha Sharma have been injured, and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
- A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) reached Dangri to conduct an initial probe, while the entire area has been cordoned off, said Jammu ADGP Mukesh Singh. Officials from the police, Army, and CRPF departments have launched a massive search operation to nab the two suspects responsible for both attacks. More troops were added to the team to intensify the search operation on Monday.
- In Sunday's attack, the accused two terrorists fired on three houses separated by a distance of around 50 meters from each other, killing four people and leaving six severely injured. This was the first such attack in the past many years in the otherwise peaceful Jammu region and coincided with the first day of the New Year.
- As informed by the eyewitnesses, the terrorists appeared in the village around 7 pm and opened indiscriminate firing that lasted for around 10 minutes. The two then immediately fled the spot. A total of 10 persons were hit by the bullets. While three of them were declared brought dead at the Government Medical College hospital, the fourth one succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment. The deceased were identified as Satish Kumar (45), Deepak Kumar (23), Pritam Lal (57), and Shishu Pal (32).
- With a difference of just 14 hours between the two incidents, the enraged locals have taken to the streets across the district to stage protests even amid a complete shutdown in Rajouri. People gathered at Dangri chowk along with the bodies of those killed in the attack and blocked roads, demanding for LG Manoj Sinha to come to the protest site. The authorities meanwhile made additional deployments in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.
- Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reached the site of the attack on Monday evening and reassured that the families of those killed and injured in this incident will get justice. He had earlier announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia and a government job to the next of kin of the civilians killed in the incident. Those behind the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Dangri village will not go unpunished, he had reassured in a tweet.
- Sarpanch of the Dangri village Deepak Kumar said that it was a serious security lapse on the part of police and security agencies. "Minority community people do not feel secure. The administration should take tough measures," he told reporters in Rajouri. The protesting locals are also enraged at the authorities, especially given that DGP Jammu Dilbagh Singh had recently said that militancy in Jammu and Kashmir is on the decline due to the 'proactive approach' of government forces against them.
- Later in the day, DGP Jammu Dilbagh Singh paid a visit to the families of the deceased in the Rajauri accident, and reassured the protesting people that the attackers will be caught and severely punished as soon as possible. Condemning the incident, he called it the 'murder of humanity'. "Those who did this will never be forgiven," he reassured.
- Several political leaders in Kashmir condemned the killing and slammed the LG-led administration for failing to weed out terrorism even after four years of abrogation of Article 370. Former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, People's Conference leader Sajad Lone, and Altaf Bukhari-led Apni Party are among the many that took to Twitter to slate the government and condemn the killings.
