Petition filed in SC against banning of newspaper publication

Senior Journalist and Editor of Kashmir Times, Anuradha Bhasin Jamwal filed a petition in the Supreme Court against banning of newspaper publication in the state. 

"After the revokationof Article 370 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the administration has strictly imposed curfews and the communication system has been shut down, which has affected the publication of newspapers in the Valley of Kashmir," she said.

The Indian government on Sunday cancelled the Samjhauta Express to Pakistan a few days after Islamabad announced the suspension of operations from its side. Pakistan's decision had come after the central government moved to revoke Article 370, giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories.

"In the last 3-4 days, we had made some commitments that we will ensure that adequate stocks of food and essential commodities will be available all around in the valley and that commitment has been fulfilled. People in the Kashmir Valley will be allowed to offer prayers in mosques during Eid-ul-Azha on Monday and restrictions on mobile and landline phones will be lifted as early as possible, a top government official said on Sunday.
         
The top priority of the government is to maintain peace and prevent any casualty and mischief in Jammu and Kashmir.
         
The district administrations are constantly reviewing the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, and they will facilitate people to offer prayers in mosques during Eid, PTI reported.

The Gorkha community living in Jammu is upbeat since the government scrapped provisions of Article 370 as they feel they will now get permanent resident certificates which will allow their children to apply for jobs and seats in professional courses of their choice.
          
Their ancestors had shifted to Jammu and Kashmir from Nepal decades ago to fight alongside the erstwhile Dogra Army and even now most families boasted of at least one war veteran, but they say they had been facing several challenges.
          
While the members are allowed to vote in assembly and local bodies elections, since three decades they have been demanding permanent residentship, representation in legislative council by nomination, scheduled tribe status and five per cent reservation in Sainik schools for their children.

Four-hour relaxation ahead of Eid in Poonch

Markets buzzed with activity as four-hour relaxation was provided ahead of Eid here on Saturday. Section 144 was imposed in view of the prevailing security situation in the region.

People thronged to markets to buy the essentials. Long queues were seen outside the ATMs.

Situation in J-K peaceful, no untoward incident in last one week: state police

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday night said that the situation in the state was peaceful and no untoward incident has been reported in last one week.

"There has been no untoward incident barring minor stone-pelting which was dealt with on the spot and was nipped in the bud," Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh told the media.

He was asked about the situation in the state after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi told mediapersons in New Delhi that situation was "very wrong".

Minutes after Gandhi made the statement, the Srinagar Police also tweeted that the situation was peaceful.

"Situation in valley has remained normal today. No untoward incident has been reported. At selective locations restriction was lifted temporarily," the tweet said.
