Shopian (Jammu and Kashmir): Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday claimed to have killed a terrorist affiliated to a proscribed terror outfit in an encounter jointly carried out by the Kashmir Police and the Army. The terrorist, according to police, has been associated with The Resistance Front (TRF). "One terrorist affiliated with proscribed terror outfit TRF neutralised. Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition recovered. Search going on," a spokesman for the Kashmir Zone Police said Thursday in a one line statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Earlier in the day, the Police wrote on X: "Encounter has started in Kathohalan area of Shopian. Police and Army are on the job. Further details shall follow." Local inputs quoting officials said the the slain militant has been identified as Maysar Ahmad Dar, a resident of Veshro area of Shopian district of south Kashmir. Maysar, sources said, had recently joined the militant ranks.
According to local inputs, the encounter broke out in the wee hours of Thursday shortly after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area following specific intelligence inputs that the militants had taken shelter there. Local inputs said that as soon as the security forces approached the suspected area, the hiding militant opened fire on the security forces which was retaliated by the latter thereby leading to an encounter between the two sides.
Sources said that a search operation is going on in the area. It was not known whether any more militants were hiding in the area.
