J&K: Security heightened in Jammu's Akhnoor border area amid Fidayeen attack threat

Army has deployed additional troops while multiple checkpoints have been set up amid a high alert about possible fidayeen attacks ahead of G20 meetings to be held in Srinagar.

Akhnoor (Jammu and Kashmir): In view of recent militant attacks in the border districts of Jammu province -Rajouri and Poonch - and the threat of Fidayeen attacks during the upcoming G20 meetings in Kashmir, security has been beefed up in border area of Akhnoor with additional troops deployed there. People coming and going towards the border area are being closely monitored.

Vehicles are being checked by blockade while monitoring is also being done by drones during the night. Earlier, orders have already been issued to keep four army schools in the area closed till May 25. The Army has deployed additional troops in Chhamb, Keri and Pargwal sectors even to intensify surveillance in the border area to foil any possible infiltration attempts.

Security forces have also set up multiple checkpoints as part of the security measures. Significantly, four army schools in the border area- Army School Mithi Maira, Akhnoor Army School, KV Akhnoor One and Two in Akhnoor area-have been closed by the authorities till May 25 as a precautionary measure. While staff has been asked to be on duty at the respective schools, the students have been asked to attend online classes for the said period.

Sources said that following the killings of five army soldiers during an encounter in Kandi forest area of Rajouri, army has been on high alert along the Akhnoor border area following inputs about possible fidayeen attacks. The high alert in the Akhnoor border area comes ahead of the upcoming G20 meetings in Kashmir scheduled to be held in Srinagar from May 22-24.

Pertinently, security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Poonch town on Wednesday morning following specific inputs about the presence of movement of "suspected people" in the area.
