Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed and one CRPF jawan martyred in a major encounter between terrorists and security forces that broke out at Malbagh area of Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar on Thursday night.
The encounter took place at Malbagh, a locality near Hazratbal shrine, when security forces, acting on an intelligence input, started a cordon and search operation, an official said.
In the incident, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Head Constable of 118 Battalion, Kuldeep Kumar Urawan, hailing from Jharkhand's Shahebganj was martyred, an official informed to ETV Bharat.
According to the reports, three militants were hiding at the outskirts of Srinagar. Reacting on a tip-off, security forces launched a cordon and search operation after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
"On a specific police input, an operation launched at the outskirts of Srinagar by city police, Special Operations Group (SOG) and CRPF. One terrorist killed during the encounter. Srinagar Police and local Security Force unit are on the job. This is the third such encounter in the last 48 hrs and fourth in the last 72 hours," said Director-General J&K police, Dilbag Singh.
