Srinagar: Former deputy chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir and BJP leader Dr Nirmal Singh termed National Conference president Farooq Abdullah's statement on the Taliban as 'ironic'. Singh said that Abdullah speaks of secular government where Muslims are in minority while he speaks of Islamic rule where Muslims are in majority.
Hitting headlines, Abdullah on Wednesday said that he expects the Taliban to deliver good governance in Afghanistan."Afghanistan is a different country. Those who have come to power (the Taliban) will have to stabilise the country. I hope they deliver justice and a good government, keeping humanity as its centrepiece and run the government on Islamic principles," Abdullah said.
Referring to the Taliban, Singh said Sikhs, Hindus were made to flee during the Taliban's rule 20 years ago. Women were assaulted and protesters were killed during their rule. Further, he critiqued whether Sheikh Abdullah's government in Jammu and Kashmir was a secular one. In a jibe, Singh said, we know what the government which ruled the erstwhile state before August 5, 2019 did to minorities in the region. He also asked what kind of dialogues were there regarding jobs and development.
Taliban entered the Afghan capital on August 15 and proclaimed victory over the government after months of violence. Former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani fled the country after the Taliban's take over and he is reportedly in the UAE. The 20-year-long US intervention in the country came to end with the withdrawal of troops on August 30. The interim government in Afghanistan is led by Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund.
