Shimla (Himachal Pradesh): The World Heritage Kalka-Shimla railway line, which currently wears a deserted look due to the COVID-19 pandemic, might soon return to its original splendour.

According to reports, the Railway Board of the Ambala Division has sought permission from the Railway headquarters for the resumption of train services on the Kalka-Shimla line from October 15.

The Shimla Railway Station wears a deserted look

If the Ministry of Railways grants permission to resume services from October 15, the tourist-favourite 'Himalayan Queen' train will return to the tracks.

Pertinently, the Railways had already decided to run the Kalka-Delhi Shatabdi train from October 15. With the Ambala Division now seeking permission to run a train from Kalka to Shimla, it would become extremely convenient for tourists to visit Shimla directly via a rail route.

Services on the line have been suspended since March 21 due to COVID

Further, even the Hotel Association of the state has requested the state government, the Union Minister Anurag Thakur, and the Railways, to restore services on the Kalka Shimla railway line. The hoteliers hope this move gives the tourism sector, which has adversely been affected by COVID, a much-needed boost.

The Durga Puja season is extremely busy for Shimla from a tourism point of view, as many visitors, especially from the South, make a beeline to the state capital. Special holiday trains are usually run for tourists during this time of the year.

However, the spread of COVID-19 forced the Ministry of Railways to suspend operations on the heritage railway line from March 21.
