Emigrant from Himachal, become MP in New Zealand

A resident of Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh has brought laurels to the country and the state by becoming an MP in New Zealand. Dr Gaurav Sharma who fought against National Party leader got 15,873 votes, making a difference of 4,386 votes.

Hamirpur: Dr Gaurav Sharma, a resident of Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, has brought laurels to the country and the state by becoming an MP in New Zealand. Sharma won from Labor Party ticket from Hamilton West seat in New Zealand after the election results announced on Saturday.

Sharma has got 15,873 votes, while his rival National Party leader got 11,487 votes. Dr Gaurav along with his family shifted to New Zealand almost two decades ago.

His father has served in Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board. Sharma is the nephew of Dr Arun Kumar Sharma, who was the former Education Secretary in the Government of Himachal Pradesh. He had also contested elections earlier but failed.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur congratulated Gaurav Sharma on his victory.

“Dr Gaurav, who belongs to Galod in Hamirpur, has earned a name for the state and the country and the people of Himachal Pradesh are feeling proud of this achievement,” said Thakur in a statement.
