Plea for judicial probe by retired judge into Karnal lathicharge

Locals have filed a petition in the High Court, demanding that the matter be investigated by a retired judge of the High Court. The petition also demands compensation for those injured during the lathicharge.

Chandigarh:The political storm created after the lathicharge of farmers in Karnal has yet to calm down. In a new development, the case has now reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Locals have filed a petition in the High Court, demanding that the matter be investigated by a retired judge of the High Court. The petition also demands compensation for those injured during the lathicharge.

In the petition filed in the High Court, it has also been demanded that the names of the police and administration officials involved should be brought to the fore and immediate action should be taken against them as well.

Apart from this, it has also been demanded in the petition that the governments of Punjab and Haryana should also ban sticks made of bamboo wood. Instead, polycarbonate sticks should be used since it causes mild injury.

On August 28, farmers in Haryana's Karnal protested against CM Manohar Lal Khattar demanding the repeal of the three contentious farm laws. The protestors were lathi-charged by police forces leading to severe injuries to several protestors and the death of one farmer.

Amid the tensions, the video of the Karnal SDM went viral on the internet. In the video, the SDM could be seen advising the police personnel to bash the heads of farmers who try to breach the barricades.
