Gurugram (Haryana): A gang of six people including two women from Manipur and four Nigerians was busted by the police in Gurugram for allegedly cheating a woman of about Rs eight lakh by befriending her on a matrimonial website. Police have recovered 16 mobiles, 28 SIM cards, four pen drives, four laptops, six ATM cards and three passports from the accused.

Speaking with the media, Gurugram Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Cybercrime Priyanshu said "A woman living in Gurugram registered a complaint saying that she had a profile on Shaadi.Com, a matrimonial site where she met a US-based eye surgeon who introduced himself as Dr Mark Bakshi. Soon they shared their contact numbers and started chatting on WhatsApp. As they grew closer, the fraudster impersonating Dr Mark offered to send her some expensive gifts and 85 thousand dollars which the woman accepted."

ACP further said, "Soon the woman got a call from a woman who introduced herself from the customs clearance and asked the woman to pay Rs 45,000 to get the gifts. Cheating the woman multiple times, the fraudsters duped her of nearly Rs 8,85,000. After the woman registered her complaint, the police began a technical investigation into the case and arrested one woman from Manipur and three Nigerians on May 10. The arrested accused were sent to two-days police remand during which they revealed the identity of their two other gang members, one woman from Manipur and one Nigerian, who were later arrested by the police."
