Ahemdabad: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials made youth do sit-ups on the road for spitting in public.
In a video that has gone viral, the Gujarat Civic Body health department officials are seen punishing a youth by making him do sit-ups for having spit in public.
Surat: Youth made to do sit-ups for spitting in public The incident took place in the Wagfat area of Surat after the youth refused to pay fine as he "didn't have enough money" which is why the officials made him do squats while holding his ears as a punishment.
The Municipal Health Officer justified his act by terming the punishment as a "preventive measure" to spread awareness among the public.
Earlier, the Municipal Corporation of Surat had issued a notice to keep the city clean.
A penalty of Rs. 100 was announced by the Surat Metropolitan Municipal Corporation on August 15 stating that if anyone is caught spitting, or throwing litter on the road will be punished.
However, if the penalty is not paid within seven days, a fine of Rs 250 will be imposed and upto Rs. 1,000 in case the first fine is not paid by the violator.
