Rajkot:Days after the government released a rating of cities for their garbage management, giving the top 'five-star garbage-free' tag to six cities including Gujarat's Rajkot, ETV Bharat reached the city on Sunday to know how the municipality achieved its goal of becoming garbage-free.
Located 215 km away from state's capital, Rajkot which is among the two cities of the state to be awarded 5-star rating for being garbage free, has been involved in the endeavor since Prime Minister Narendra Modi began Swachh Bharat Campaign.
Talking to ETV Bharat, RMC Commissioner Udit Agrawal said they proceeded with identifying faults in their garbage management system and simultaneously, engaged in fixing the flaws, thereby, achieving the goal.
"Rajkot has not only banned spitting in public but also single-use plastic bags. Arrangements have been made for separate collection of dry and wet waste and introduced door-to-door collection of garbage with GPS installed in vehicles to monitor whether these vehicles are following their assigned routes or not. These vehicles collect garbage throughout the day from different residential colonies and then segregate the wet and dry garbage at two places near the Aji dam," he said.
As per reports, these vehicles collect approximately 700 tons of waste.
In addition to this, under the 'Eye-Way ' project CCTV cameras have been installed at public places to capture people who spit on roads. Subsequently, fines are imposed for spiting on road.
