Public benches in Gujarat upturned to enforce social distancing

Teams of young men along with village panchayat members across Gujarat's Kheda district took the novel step of turning all benches at public places upside down in order to dissuade people from gathering and sitting shoulder-to-soulder.

Kheda: With the deadly coronavirus spreading to rural areas from cities, concerned citizens have upturned benches in various villages of Kheda district to prevent gathering of people, especially senior citizens and compelling them to remain confined to their homes.

Teams of young men, members of village panchayat and other concerned citizens have turned public benches upside down in villages of Nadiad, Mahudha and Mehmedabad taluks of the district in a bid to prevent gathering of crowd and enforcing lockdown.

It was observed that despite the efforts of the administration and the police, people are not taking the lockdown seriously and behaving irresponsibly by sitting should-to-shoulder in groups on benches.

In view of this, all the benches near public squares, temples and other public places have been turned upside down to prevent people from sitting in close proximity with one another.
