Ahmedabad (Gujarat):The Bharat Bandh called by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha failed to make an impact in Gujarat till noon even as several leaders appealed to the farmers and people to make the bandh a success.
Barring a few places, all the markets, shops, banks, government and private offices, and other commercial establishments functioned normally.
Various Congress leaders were detained by the police after they approached the traders to join the Bandh.
However, farmers in rural areas of the Surat district including Mangrol, Kamaraj, Bardoli have been protesting since early morning who were also detained by the police.
Till noon, no major untoward incident took place as a large number of police personnel has been deployed.
Lukewarm response to Bharat Bandh in Gujarat, markets remain open The bandh is being observed from 6 am to 4 pm during which all government and private offices, educational and other institutions, shops, industries and commercial establishments as well as public events and functions will be closed throughout the country.
More than 500 farmer organisations, 15 trade unions, political parties, six state governments and varied sections of society have extended their support for the bandh. State governments of Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Punjab, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh have also extended their support to the Bharat Bandh protest.
