Ahmedabad: Gujarat high court has permitted the litigant to execute the court notice through WhatsApp as it was not easy to get out of the home during the nationwide lockdown triggered by coronavirus pandemic.
The HC has for the first time started e-filing of petitions and affidavits because of the lockdown in place to check the spread of Covid-19.
According to reports, most cases are heard via video conferencing and even in the case of a habeas corpus writ, the corpus is presented before the judge via video conferencing.
The instant case involves a labour contractor, Jayesh Bavrava, who was working in a ceramic unit in Morbi. An offense was registered against the accused under the SC / ST Act and IT Act as the plaintiff belonged to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, reports said.
The lower court had rejected his bail application following which he moved the Gujarat High Court seeking bail. Justice Kogaj issued notice and ordered the respondent to execute the notice through WhatsApp, reports added.
Reportedly, notices are usually served by the police, but because of the adverse circumstances, the defendant's counsel was allowed to execute the court notice through WhatsApp.
