Gujarat: Declared brain dead after accident, two youths give new life to 12 people

Four kidneys, two livers, one heart, two lungs and four corneas were donated. While the lungs transplantation was done at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital Hyderabad, heart transplantation at Care Institute of Medical Science Hospital, Ahmedabad, livers transplantation at Shalby and Sterling Hospital, Ahmedabad and four corneas were donated to Lok Drashti Chakshu Bank (Eye bank). Transplantation of kidneys will be done at the Institute of Kidney Disease And Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad.

Both the youngsters were killed in a hit-and-run accident. They were returning home after a birthday party in a restaurant on VIP road. Police have registered a case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. Police said the owner of Creta car that hit the duo was a textile trader. The car was driven by Rizwan Sheikh and was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage.

The NGO has done notable work in organ donation. While the ratio of Cadaveric Organ Donation in India witnessed a dip during the Covid-19 pandemic, 124 organs including 38 kidneys, 22 livers, nine hearts, 14 lungs, one pancreas, 38 corneas were donated by the NGO saving the lives of 114 people in India and other parts of the world.

So far, the NGO has a record of 400 kidneys, 167 livers, 35 hearts, 18 lungs and 302 corneas donations from Surat alone.
