Gujarat's Dang district bans selfies at tourist sites

Clicking stunning selfies in front of scenic tourist sites is no longer allowed in Dang district in the wake of increasing fatal accidents.

Surat: The urge to click selfies in front of breathtaking waterfalls or scenic tourist sites in Dang district of Gujarat may lead to trouble. Reports say the district has banned selfies in the wake of increasing accidents involving tourists trying to click stunning pictures.

Reports said Additional District Magistrate TK Damor issued a public notification last week banning selfies. The order also imposed a ban on local people entering rivers or water bodies during the monsoon season. The ban is not new, selfies were banned on the Waghai-Saputara highway and waterfalls in 2019, reports said.

Sources said violators will be fined Rs 200 or imprisonment for a month.

Damor said scores of tourists have been descending on Dang they act irresponsibly while taking selfies leading to fatal accidents. He said the notification was issued to curb such accidents. The administration also said that selfies were taken not only at tourist spots but also on roads, cliffs, waterfalls and rivers.

Following the relaxation of Covid restrictions, tourists have been reportedly thronging Dang. Mahal campsite, Shabridham, Pampa Sarovar, Giradhod, Saputara Hill Station are among the main tourist attractions in the area.
