Yamuna below danger mark as water level recedes

The water level recedes below the danger mark of 206.33 metres in Yamuna river. Water has reached the highest level of 206.60 metres and remained constant for seven hours. 23,000 people have been rescued from the flood plains of the river and accommodated in relief tents. Traffic restored at the old iron bridge.

New Delhi: Water level in the Yamuna river is receding and it is now flowing below the danger mark of 205.33 metres, an official said on Thursday.
"The level of water in the Yamuna at the railway bridge was 206.60 metres at 10 am. It is expected to recede further," the official at the flood department's control room said.

Vehicular movement over the old iron bridge, which was stopped on Monday amid the rising water levels in the Yamuna, was resumed on Wednesday evening on both sides while the Northern Railways have also restored rail traffic at 6.25 pm on Wednesday with restrictions on the speed at 20 kmph.

The water level in the Yamuna reached the highest level of 206.60 metres on Wednesday morning and remained constant for nearly seven hours. The river started receding from the afternoon and flowed at 206.44 metres at 6 pm. It had crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Monday.

In a relief to people, the alert that was raised against the water level was withdrawn on Wednesday as the water level is expected to further go down.

Officials said around 23,000 affected people were evacuated from the flood-plains to safer places. Over 18,000 of them were accommodated in more than 2700 relief tents set up by the Delhi government agencies.

A total of 35 boats were deployed to rescue the stranded people.
