'There is no fear of law,' says Nirbhaya's mother on Gargi incident

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Nirbhaya's mother said that incidents like the Gargi College case are still happening as culprits have no fear of the law. She said that the defects in the legal system have made criminals fearless.

New Delhi: Reacting to the alleged case of sexual harassment at the Gargi College, 2012 Delhi gangrape and murder victim Nirbhaya's mother on Monday said that such incidents are happening as the culprits feel no fear of the law.

Speaking exclusively to ETV Bharat about the incident, she said that crimes against women are still happening, as the culprits are being looked after in jail with all facilities.

"They have no fear of the law. They know nothing will happen to them. At the most, they will be jailed for some time and will then walk out," she said.

Accusing human rights organisations of shielding the culprits, Nribhaya's mother said that the situation might not improve unless the culprits are given timely punishment and a message is sent to the society.

"If the convicts in my daughter's case had been executed within 1-2 years, maybe the situation would have been better. But it is due to the defects in our laws and human rights system," she said.

Earlier on February 6, a group of men broke into the all-women Gargi College and allegedly groped, harassed and molested students.

The outrage of Gargi students following the attacks during their college festival Reverie, found wide echo with students from other colleges sharing their anguish, political parties speaking out and the issue being raised in Parliament.
