Students, activists, professionals stage anti-CAA stir at India Gate

Braving the freezing cold, hundreds of students, professionals and civil society activists thronged the India Gate on Saturday evening to protest against the amended Citizenship Act.

Amid heavy police deployment, the protesters raised slogans against the BJP government and sought revocation of the new legislation as it tears into the secular fabric of the country.

Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad gave 'inflammatory speech' at Jama Masjid, says FIR

Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad, who was arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj area, gave "inflammatory speech" at Jama Masjid after the Friday prayers due to which the crowd started moving from the mosque towards Delhi Gate, police said in its FIR.

The FIR, which does not name anyone as accused, said the crowd at Delhi Gate was stopped from moving ahead using barricades and they were asked to disperse using loudspeakers and the mosque also made the announcement.

Police conduct flag march in violence-hit areas in Delhi as anti-CAA protests continue

A day after massive protests and violence in the national capital, police and paramilitary personnel carried out flag march in violence-hit areas, even as scores of people held peaceful demonstrations against the amended Citizenship Act at several places.

A large number of students, activists and professionals gathered at India Gate to register their anguish over the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Earlier in the day, police and paramilitary personnel carried out flag march in northeast Delhi's Seemapuri and Seelampur which recently witnessed violent during protests.

Aam Aadmi Party MLA and Delhi Waqf Board Chairman Amanatullah Khan announces compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC across the country. The compensation will be paid by Delhi Waqf Board.

11 sent to two-week judicial custody over Seemapuri violence

A Delhi court today sent 11 people, arrested in connection with violence in Seemapuri area of northeast Delhi on Friday, to 14 days' judicial custody, a lawyer in the case said.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mayank Mittal sent the accused to jail as the police did not seek their custodial interrogation, said advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan, who represented the accused.

The counsel submitted before the court that three of the accused had serious injuries and there was no prima facie case made out against any of them.

Delhi court rejects Bhim Army Chief's bail plea, sends him to 14-day judicial custody

Delhi's Tis Hazari Court sent Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad to 14-day judicial custody after rejecting his bail plea. Azad is now being taken to Tihar Jail from the Court. He was arrested earlier today after being denied permission for a protest march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar.

Fifteen people arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj area were sent to two days' judicial custody by a city court on Saturday.

Detainees from Daryaganj brought to Court

Fifteen people arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj area were produced before the Tis Hazari Court.

The police sought 14 days' judicial custody. One of those arrested claimed he was a juvenile. However, police said he is aged 23.

Four students detained during anti-CAA protest outside UP Bhawan in Delhi

The Delhi Police today detained four students during a protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act outside Uttar Pradesh Bhawan in Chanakyapuri, officials said.

The protesters were taken to the Mandir Marg police station, they said.

The students had gathered outside Uttar Pradesh Bhawan with banners which read "No CAA, No NRC" and "Save Constitution".

The students said that they are from Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, the police said.

Jamia students protest outside university campus against CAA

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia on Saturday staged a protest outside the university campus against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The protest at the main gate of the university was started by women students and later men also joined them.

They raised slogans such as "Ladke lenge azadi" and "Inquilab Zindabad".

The situation in areas hit by violence during protests against the new citizenship law is gradually returning to normal, police said on Saturday, and assured that a heavy deployment of security personnel has been made in Old Delhi and Seemapuri areas.

Stone-pelting and incidents of violence were reported from Daryaganj in Old Delhi and Seemapuri in northeast part of the national capital on Friday.

Manish Seth, secretary of Daryaganj Traders' Association, said all shops in the area opened on Saturday morning and there's no unrest. He said police have been keeping a tight vigil.

A senior police officer from Shahdara district said situation was under control in the area.

"Delhi Police have dominated the area and are conducting flag marches since Friday evening to ensure that no untoward incident is reported," he added.

10 held for Daryaganj violence

Fifteen people have been arrested in connection with the violence in Daryaganj in Old Delhi during a protest against the new citizenship law.

Initially, 10 people were held but five more were arrested later, they said.       

Those arrested have been charged with rioting and using force to deter policemen from doing duty, police said.

New Delhi: The situation at the police headquarters at ITO area, where scores of people gathered to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), is being monitored, Delhi Police said on Saturday.

A police source said the "situation was under control" after additional PCR vans were rushed to the protest site. The gathering of people comprised around 300-350 students, according to police sources.

Police said the protesters raised slogans against the BJP-led Central government over the CAA and the NRC.

Hours after a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Friday turned violent with the pelting of stones at police and torching of a car in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central, near the Delhi Gate, protesters gathered at the Delhi Police HQ at ITO and shouted slogans.

ACP Kamla Market (sub-division of central district) Amit Kaushik, SHO Kamla market, Darya Ganj, Hauz Kaji and IP Estate are on the spot, police said.

DCP central district M.S. Randhawa is in constant touch with all adjoining police station's SHOs and joint CP central range, police sources said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Fire Services said it did not receive any call from Delhi Police HQ regarding the protest.
