Railways to speed up trains upto 160 kmph on Delhi-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai routes

As part of the mission to increase average speed of the trains across the network, Indian Railways has decided to upgrade the speed of Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai route trains. The speed will be raised to 160 kilometres per hour.

New Delhi: Aiming for faster passenger movement in a short span of time, Indian Railways is soon going to upgrade the speed of trains upto 160 kilometers per hour on the routes of Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai.

Pradeep Kumar, Member (Signal and Telecom) Railway Board, said, "We are planning to speed up trains upto 160 kmph for Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai routes. These routes are almost ready for fitness and signalling consideration. We are expecting to run these high-speed trains in this financial year."

He also informed that on the "Golden Quadrilateral" route which included Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Chennai, Railways is all set to gear up maximum trains to run at the speed of 130 kmph. "For the last few years, there has been a continuous effort by Railways as we are technically upgrading all tracks, signals, coaches among other facilities," Kumar added.

Availing the opportunity of suspension of passenger services due to COVID crisis, Indian Railways focused on several long-pending overdue maintenance works including yard remodelling, repair and re-ordering of old bridges, doubling and electrification of railway lines. The Railway official said, "We have cleared severe bottlenecks. A number of trains have now been introduced."

Vande Bharat is a semi-high speed train which is running on these routes and can run upto a speed of 130 kmph. While the speed of Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express has also been increased by Railways.
