Protect Doctors: Centre mulling non-bailable warrant for culprits

In conversation with ETV Bharat, Dr RV Ashokan, Secretary General of IMA informed that all the members, in the first meeting of the inter-ministerial committee, have called for a common central law for the culprits involved in attacking doctors and vandalizing hospitals.

New Delhi:Centre is mulling for a stringent law up to the level of a non-bailable warrant for the culprits involved in attacking doctors and vandalizing hospitals.

In the first inter-ministerial committee meeting, all the members have reportedly called for common central law.

In conversation with ETV Bharat, Dr RV Ashokan, Secretary General of Indian Medical Association (IMA) said: "All the ten members present in the meeting opined for a central law. The law ministry also remarked that it was feasible to have a law for this purpose under the concurrent list."

Moreover, in Wednesday's meeting, it was decided to form a subcommittee for drafting the law.

"The first meeting of the draft committee will take place on July 17 and the full committee will sit on July 21," informed Dr Ashokan.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare constituted an inter-ministerial committee to look into the issue of assault on doctors and hospitals.

The inter-ministerial committee comprised of officials from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Legal Affairs among others.
