Prison reformer wishes to recite Garuda Purana before Nirbhaya case convicts

The prison reformer Dr Pradeep Raghunandan has written a letter to the authorities of Tihar jail and has sought permission to read out 'Garuda Purana' to four convicts before their hanging.

New Delhi:Ahead of implementing the death sentence for Nirbhaya case convicts, a prison reformer called for reciting verses from 'Garuda Purana' to mentally prepare the convicts before hanging.

The prison reformer Dr Pradeep Raghunandan has written a letter to the authorities of Tihar jail and has sought permission to read out 'Garuda Purana' to four convicts before their hanging.

'Garuda Purana', is a holy scripture which talks of the soul’s journey after death.

Pradeep has been assured by the jail authorities that the needful will be done but any written order has not been approved yet.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, jail reformer Pradeep said: "Nirbhaya's convicts have been sentenced to death under the Code of Law. We have urged to Tihar jail administration to allow us to read out Garuda Purana. It will help the convicts to mentally prepare themselves before death."

Letter

The letter was written to the jail Director General Sanjeev Goyal and he assured that the matter will be considered seriously.

Explaining the importance of Garuda Purana, Pradeep said: "The recital of the Garuda Purana will enable them to have a better afterlife."

The officials said that the correspondence with the Home Ministry has taken place.

Meanwhile, it takes 9-10 days to recites the Garuda Purana but in this case, the process will be completed in 2-3 days.

Earlier, the jail reformer Pradeep has worked as a radio jockey in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and has even made an arrangement of games such as carrom board, Chess and Volleyball and Football for the prisoners.
